Belews Lake was made to cool a power plant, and the heat is not a metaphor. Anglers talk about discharge water around 94 degrees, main-channel temperatures still in the 70s through winter, no ordinary fall turnover except in the far backs of creeks. Duke Energy owns the land within and immediately beside the water. Shoreline access for adjacent owners is a lease, not just a backyard assumption. A lake day here begins with a property instrument and a power station. The old fish story is severe enough to keep the sentence plain. Selenium from coal fly ash eliminated most of the fish species; recovery came after inputs stopped, but the case remains famous in ecotoxicology. So the honest description is not "poison lake" and not "all healed." It is recovered water with an industrial memory, warm clear sections, red-clay cloud near stirred banks, a plant siren written into regulation, Alabama bass pressure, scuba curiosity, coal-ash neighbors told not to drink well water. Belews is the portfolio's strangest warmth: winter bass water, lab-report water, oak-pine shoreline, a bright surface with a furnace underneath.

- Public access
- Belews Lake is a Duke Energy-owned cooling reservoir spanning Stokes, Forsyth, Rockingham, and Guilford counties. Public water and shoreline access is permitted; four public boat ramps ring the lake (two NCWRC-commissioned: Piney Bluff and Pine Hall), plus Humphreys Ridge and the fee-based Carolina Marina. A new 216-acre Forsyth County park opened January 2025 on the south shore with a fishing dock and trails but no boat ramp. Fees/permits: NCWRC/county ramps and the Forsyth County park are free; Carolina Marina (private) charges a launch fee.. Where it’s heading
Declining hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026
Census ACS 2024 records a median home value of roughly $214,667, with no time series on the sheet to establish a price trajectory. Belews carries unresolved environmental burdens: a court-ordered coal-ash excavation (2020 consent order, ~11.9 million tons, with a 2034 completion backstop) is still underway, neighbors near the ash basin were sent state letters warning their well water was unsafe, and NCWRC surveys show an invasive Alabama Bass population crashing the largemouth fishery. An earlier selenium episode did recover (per Lemly 1997, waterborne selenium fell from a ~20 ug/L pre-1986 peak to under 1 ug/L by 1996, with the fish-consumption advisory lifted around 2001), but the active remediation, groundwater warnings, and fishery decline weigh the near-term trajectory downward.
