Leech Lake is too big to turn into one scene. The newer worksheet makes the better shape: more than 100,000 acres, 80 percent of it under 35 feet, but Walker Bay dropping to about 150. Shallow inland sea, deep pocket. Wind owns the main basin. Walleye water, muskie water, Caspian terns at Walker and Federal Dam, Common Loon in June. The Ojibwe dictionary gives the name as Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag. The lake is not just a resort surface. It anchors older claims. At Federal Dam the water becomes story and machinery at once. The 1955 muskie run reads like a local fever: dozens of silver muskies landing in a weekend, at least 163 fish recorded at Federal Dam in two weeks, lures rented because shops could not keep up. The dam and outlet are the sober counterweight. Campground, ramps, marsh, mooring canal, water held and released. A fish-camp lake with a controlled-water skeleton. A place where wind, tribal geography, and old fishing stories all have more authority than a brochure.
