Higgins Lake

Centroid 44.4743, -84.7227

Higgins Lake is clear in the blunt, maintained way: deep oligotrophic glacial water, sand and marl underneath, two basins and a sunken island with an artificial spawning reef of broken concrete. The Michigan DNR gives the working numbers first, 10,186 acres, about 135 feet at the deepest point, then the fish and history: trout stocking, smelt under the ice, cisco showing up like a cold-water old memory. A bright lake with a fully built rim. Eighty-six road-end access points. Homes and cottages all the way around the shine. South Higgins makes the public side obvious: one mile of state-park shoreline, buoyed swim areas, a protected boat basin with nine launches, boat wash, campground shade, hot pavement, towels, coolers, sunscreen, the ordinary clatter of Michigan summer. Then the stranger management facts under it. Court-ordered water levels to the hundredth of a foot. A swimmer's-itch program that trapped and relocated common merganser broods, took hens under permit, and reported a 98 percent drop in snail infection. Not wilderness. Not just resort water. A lake famous for clarity, and busy doing its own maintenance.
