Priest Lake

Centroid 48.5884, -116.8650

Priest Lake is best read northbound. Indian Creek and Lionhead begin with cedar, fir and tamarack, public ramps, docks, swimming water and camp loops; across the main body, Luby Bay and Reeder Bay add Forest Service beaches and camps. The open lake carries full-scale recreation—fishing boats, wakeboards, jet skis, sails—with enough length for weather and engine sound to travel. Bartoo Island interrupts the crossing with twenty-five campsites reachable only by boat. Keep going and the lake narrows toward the Thorofare. Bonner County makes the channel entirely no-wake, so the motor drops from propulsion to steerage while the banks pull close into a cedar corridor. Beyond it lies Upper Priest Lake, a separate waterbody reached by boat, foot or bicycle. That progression is Priest Lake's signature: an actual route from developed public recreation into backcountry. State-endowment cottage lots and private resorts remain on the shoreline map, but they do not supply the lake's organizing rhythm. Distance does, mile after forested mile.

Where it’s heading

Rising hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026

Rising: Bonner County ranks among Idaho's fastest-growing (~2.95% annualized 2020-2026; ~4,656 new parcels 2016-2021), and the growth is documented on Priest Lake itself — the Stockton/Tricore 65-acre wetland platted into 27 lots by 2021, the Yoman Bluffs and The Woods subdivisions, and Idaho's ongoing auction of state-endowment cottage leases into private ownership. The county comprehensive plan flags expanding shoreline homes/businesses and recreation as water-quality concerns. Documented subdivision velocity, not just a high price level.
