McCall drinks a lake that gets noisy by noon. The North Fork supplies most of its inflow, and Payette keeps seventy-nine percent of the phosphorus it receives. In summer 2020, residents reported a bad smell and thick green granular algae. The next August, a dog became ill after swimming; testing found low toxins in bottom-dwelling cyanobacteria, enough for caution but no health advisory. The town does not get a separate lake for its taps. Payette has long put engines where they seem slightly wrong. In 1924, airplane motors pushed sleighs across the ice. Now Highway 55 becomes Lake Street along the south shore, powerboats and jet skis roughen water by noon, and the airport works April through October as a wildfire base. Within three hundred feet of shore, no wake; beyond it, no special lake rule. Winter usually quiets the surface; foot travel is the only recommended way onto the ice. By February 2026, it looked likely to stay open for the first winter since 1934.

- Public access
- Payette Lake's public access is concentrated in two jurisdictions: Ponderosa State Park (IDPR), covering most of the McCall peninsula, with the Peninsula Boat Ramp, the North Beach Unit (boat ramp + beach on the north shore), and additional swim beaches; and the City of McCall's downtown waterfront parks, chiefly Legacy Park (public boat ramp, enclosed swim area, dock) plus Rotary Park, Art Roberts Park, and Brown's Park. Access is abundant and not restricted; no evidence of any closure or private lockout was found. Fees/permits: Ponderosa State Park: IDPR day-use/vehicle fee applies (search-extraction cites a $5/day gate fee at the main entrance and separately a $4 parking fee at North Beach without an annual pass; IDPR annual pass ~$25/year) — exact current schedule not confirmed on the park's own page. City of McCall Legacy Park boat ramp: $15/day or $100/season (ID residents), $30/day or $200/season (out-of-state), per 2025 news reporting.. Where it’s heading
Rising hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026
Rising, documented on population and pressure rather than price: McCall grew 2,991 → 3,686 between the 2010 and 2020 censuses (+23%) in a town whose population "can more than triple" in summer; Valley County housing permits ran 325 / 282 / 232 in 2022–2024 (FRED, search-extraction — still building, decelerating); the state's endowment-lot divestment has moved $277.1 million of shoreline into private hands since 2010; in December 2025 the city offered $1-a-year ground leases to get workforce housing built ("allow locals to compete among locals"); the county board chair's 2026 line is "We get loved to death up here" and the waterways rules are being rewritten in 2026. Hedges: the July 2025 auction drew no bidders and permits are decelerating — pressure, not a boom.
