June Lake

Centroid 37.7886, -119.0736

A glacier split around Reversed Peak and left a horseshoe canyon, June Lake tucked into the bend at 7,621 feet — a mile and a fifth long, half that wide, sixty feet deep on average, a hundred sixty-eight at the bottom. That canyon carries the one creek in the eastern Sierra that runs toward the mountains, not away, threading from Gull Lake to Silver past the town in the crook. Snow closes the loop road each winter, and the lake once froze thick enough to saw into blocks for a shoreline ice house. Its big trout are bought, not state-planted: the state's list shows no trophy fish here, while Mono County spends $110,000 a year on the ones anglers photograph. The ski area has lost money every season since 1986 and closed outright for 2012–13. What holds instead is wind steady enough to sail on, with osprey plunging for trout and Common Mergansers, Belted Kingfishers, and Great Blue Herons along the water.

Dogs and pets
medium — 1 dog park within 25 mi (OSM); state rule: California State Parks require dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. Dogs are generally NOT allowed on state park trails or swim beaches; a small number of parks (e.g. Pismo State Beach / Oceano Dunes SVRA) carve out exceptions allowing leashed dogs on the beach and trails. (California State Parks official pet policy (Dogs & Other Pets page) and Pet Policy FAQ; specific California Code of Regulations Title 14 section number was not located within the search budget., fetched 2026-07-12); No lake-specific pet rule was stated on the USFS June Lake Loop page (silent on dogs); page suggests contacting the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center, (760) 647-3044, for specifics. Not pursued further per Task C budget (this was the one opportunistic pet check for June Lake). curated-web-harvest · lake-level · as of Jul 12, 2026

Where it’s heading

Stable hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026

Stable: an established seasonal second-home village with no documented growth vector. Population 629 → 611 between the 2010 and 2020 censuses (−2.9%); 571 of 794 households were part-time as of the 2000 demographics and the ACS 2024 5-year CDP median age is 66.3 ±6.3 (Census Reporter); the ski hill has run at a loss every year since 1986, closed for 2012–13 and reopened 2013–14 under new investment (now Alterra); the county pays $110,000 a year to supplement stocking (Mono County Tourism, 2026). Hedges: no dated price trajectory exists in the harvest (Redfin/Zillow refused the fetcher; block-group ACS median $567,700 vs Mono County $639,400 ±$53,544 is a level, not a slope), no permit series was fetched, and the only pressure signals are a chamber calendar grown to three autumn festivals and the Alterra snowmaking/lift investment.
