Elk Lake is the chain's last word. Thirteen lakes drain down toward it, and then Elk gives the water to East Grand Traverse Bay through the Elk River, about 60 percent of Grand Traverse Bay's inflow by the watershed council's accounting. Not a standalone bowl. A final basin. Torch River nearby, Elk Rapids below, Lake Skegemog behind it. Water arriving with a history of other lakes already inside it. The color is the useful part because it is not just pretty. Tip of the Mitt says calcium carbonate gives the summer water its characteristic emerald green. Oligotrophic, low-nutrient, oxygen down through the depths, little soft sediment for plants. About 8,200 acres on the watershed page, about 195 feet deep, Michigan's second-deepest inland lake. Cold water under a resort-region surface. Somewhere in that cold is an Elk Lake lake-trout strain biologists study because it does deep-water spawning in a way that matters beyond the lake. Then the management facts come up from underneath. The Elk River dam blocks fish movement between the Chain and Lake Michigan, but it also works as a sea-lamprey barrier. Zebra and quagga mussels are already named here. ESLA's rule language keeps wakes 100 feet off shore, docks, swimmers, fishing boats, sailboats, and moored vessels; swimmer's itch advice gets practical fast: towel off, avoid midday, avoid onshore-wind water where larvae collect near the surface. Emerald water, yes. Also rules, parasites, mussels, a dam gate, a clean-looking lake with a lot of systems showing through.

- Public access
- Elk Lake has at least two Michigan DNR boating-access sites plus Whitewater Township Park (southwest shore) and Kewadin Public Access (north end). Public shoreline access exists but is spread across several modest sites rather than one large public beach. Fees/permits: $12 entrance/launch fee and Recreation Passport required at Michigan DNR access sites on Elk Lake; Whitewater Township Park fees not confirmed.. - Dogs and pets
- high — 12 dog parks within 25 mi (OSM); state rule: Michigan state parks, recreation areas, and DNR boating access sites require pets be under immediate control on a leash no longer than 6 feet, even in water. Pets are barred from any area a park manager designates as a bathing/swim beach, though some parks carve out separate pet-friendly beach segments outside the main swim beach. (Mich. Admin. Code R 299.927 (State Land Use Rules, DNR Law Enforcement Division — State parks and recreation areas; unlawful acts), fetched 2026-07-12); Whitewater Township Park's official rules page (likely states pet/leash policy) returned HTTP 403 and was not retried per harvest rules. No lake-specific pet exception confirmed; default to the general Michigan state-land pet rule pending curator follow-up. curated-web-harvest · lake-level · as of Jul 12, 2026

Where it’s heading
Stable hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026
Established premium market on the Elk River Chain of Lakes (Antrim County, NW Michigan) — second-deepest inland lake in the state, Elk Rapids second-home/recreation identity. Median home value $369,340 (census-acs-2024-b25077, mean over the lake tract + tracts within 5 km, hand-filled 2026-06-08 after the API key was restored — a rural tract-area mean spanning Antrim/Grand Traverse/Kalkaska, so it reads below actual lakefront, the documented pipeline limitation). No documented growth-velocity signal this pass; rated stable as an established, supply-constrained clear-water market. Hand-rated for v0.1.
