Smith Mountain Lake

Centroid 37.0780, -79.5870

In the dark hours, Smith Mountain pumps itself back uphill. Water drops from the upper lake through turbine-generators into Leesville when power is needed, then returns when demand falls, a two-reservoir machine with a normal full pond of 795 feet and a daily mood set partly by electricity. The shoreline does not look like machinery from a dock. It looks like houses, marinas, public and private ramps, coves, boathouses, rental weeks, and summer boat traffic thick enough that Virginia DWR tells anglers to work very early, at night, or in quieter coves. The park side gives the lake its public handle: beach, cabins, campground, fishing pier, boat ramp, trails, a north-shore door in Bedford County. The DCR page says the park's 500-foot beach is one of two public beaches on the lake. Two public beaches, about 500 miles of shoreline. A very clean ratio. The fish report gives the rest pressure and motion: bass citations, stocked stripers, piers and fallen trees, lower-lake summer patterns, fish moving with forage and temperature. At night the lower lake holds the water until it is time to send it back.

Public access
Smith Mountain Lake is a reservoir owned and operated by Appalachian Power (AEP) under FERC hydroelectric license, but public access is extensive. Virginia DWR maintains six free public boat-ramp access sites around the lake, and Smith Mountain Lake State Park (DCR) adds its own boat ramp, a 500-foot swim beach, and a 112-foot universally accessible fishing pier. AEP also partners with DWR on a ~5,000-acre public hunting/fishing shoreline tract, and dozens of commercial marinas within the project boundary provide further access. Fees/permits: Smith Mountain Lake State Park: boat-launch fee for day-use visitors (free for overnight campers/cabin guests); annual boat-launch pass available by phone (800-933-PARK); guarded swim-beach access is fee-based; parking fees apply for day-use areas. Virginia DWR public access ramps: no launch fee noted; swimming, camping, and alcohol display prohibited on-site. Fishing/hunting on the AEP-DWR shoreline tract requires a valid Virginia license.. Dogs and pets
medium — 0 dog parks within 25 mi (OSM); state rule: Virginia State Parks require pets to be confined or kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet and kept under supervision at all times. Pets are prohibited at designated swimming areas/beaches and in public buildings (bathhouses, visitor centers, offices). (Virginia State Parks pet policy (Dept. of Conservation and Recreation), fetched 2026-07-12); No lake-specific off-leash area, dog park, or pet-swim exception was found for Smith Mountain Lake or Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The park is subject to the statewide Virginia State Parks rule: pets must be leashed (max 6 ft) and are prohibited on the designated swim beach. Virginia DWR's public boating access sites at the lake prohibit swimming outright for all visitors (not a pet-specific rule). curated-web-harvest · lake-level · as of Jul 12, 2026

Where it’s heading

Stable hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026

Census ACS 2024 (B25077) reports a block-group median home value of $424,800, and the lake sustains an established second-home and vacation-rental economy about 40 miles from both Roanoke and Lynchburg, with the VA DWR waterbody page noting most of the shoreline is already developed with residential homes. AEP relicensed the project in 2010 for a 30-year term and the lake has hosted an ESPN Bassmaster Elite Series tournament for several years, indicating a settled rather than surging trajectory. This is a hand-rated direction inferred from the fully-developed-shoreline market context rather than a measured home-value time series (only a single ACS-2024 level is on the sheet).
