Keowee is engineered clean water, not a simple clear-water fantasy. SC DNR gives the plain machinery first: an 18,372-acre Duke Energy cooling reservoir for Oconee Nuclear Station, formed by impounding the Little and Keowee Rivers. Clemson's watershed page calls Keowee and Jocassee a vital drinking-water source and uses the word pristine; divers complicate that with visibility that can be good, bad, or erased by flow. At the Hot Hole, warmed Oconee water comes back into the lake and makes current where a lake should not have current. A drift dive inside a reservoir. Still water with a shove in it. The north end changes the sentence. At Keowee-Toxaway, the lake sits under the Blue Ridge foothills with Raven Rock, Natural Bridge, Poe Creek, mountain laurel, blueberries, orchids, trillium, ginseng, and a canoe/kayak access small enough to feel like a side door. At night: Chuck-will's-widow, whip-poor-will, Barred Owl. Under the surface is another layer, the Keowee town and Fort Prince George history, excavated before inundation. So the lake has several lights at once: utility-bright, park-green, archaeological-dark, dock-permit ordinary. Water made for power, asked to be drinking water, recreation water, and memory water at the same time.

Where it’s heading
Stable hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026
The Census ACS block group around the lake reports a median home value of $542,550 (census-acs-2024), a high-value lakefront market in the Clemson/Upstate South Carolina corridor anchored by the Cliffs communities. Duke Energy's Keowee-Toxaway shoreline program remains actively managed, with new private-dock application fees ($500 Lake Services plus $500 KT Habitat Enhancement Program) effective January 15, 2025. The sheet carries no home-value time series, and the market reads as an established, built-out luxury second-home and retirement lake rather than one on a measured upswing, so the trajectory is rated stable.
