Lake Martin

Centroid 32.8090, -85.9180

At Martin, the first fact is a calendar. Alabama Power can make the lake feel full or picked-over depending on the month: filling toward 491 feet by May 1, summer pool held until September, drawdown beginning after that, December water around 484. The shore knows the rule curve. Dock posts show old wet rings. Ramps get longer. A chair left too low starts looking like a small mistake. The reservoir is enormous in the official numbers: 41,150 acres, 880 miles of shoreline, 31 miles long, 155 feet deep at the dam. Then Wind Creek opens the public door. The state park calls itself the public's access to Lake Martin: 1,444 acres on the shore, one of the largest state-owned campgrounds in the country, fish tournaments, swim area, marina, cabins, bald eagles and ospreys. Elsewhere the lake gets louder and more mythic: Chimney Rock as landmark, Acapulco Rock nearby as the jumping rock people confuse with it, pontoon wakes gathered into a summer amphitheater, Russell Lands neighborhoods, coves folding back into pine-heavy shore. The quieter signals are real too: Chuck-will's-widow in June, Wind Creek birds, a Treasured Alabama Lake water-watch culture. Martin does not read as one place. It is a water-level schedule, a dam history, a campground city, a cliff-island rumor, and a long green shoreline where summer has to negotiate with the gauge.

Public access
Lake Martin has extensive public access. The Alabama Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources operates Wind Creek State Park (marina, multi-lane boat ramp, swim beach, campground) plus additional public access points at Smith Landing, Madwind Creek, Kowaliga Creek, and Pace's Point. Alabama Power operates day-use parks including D.A.R.E. Power Park and The Preserves, and numerous named public boat ramps ring the lake. Fees/permits: Wind Creek State Park charges a day-use entrance fee (~$5/adult, $2 kids/seniors) plus a boat launch fee (~$5), per search-extraction; not independently confirmed via fetched fee schedule. Alabama Power day-use parks (D.A.R.E. Power Park, The Preserves): no fee information found, likely free.. Dogs and pets
low — Alabama Power's current Lake Martin recreation page confirms that dogs are not allowed at Centennial Park, a developed lakefront day-use area; the restriction is broader than the normal swim-beach-only rule. curator · lake-level · as of Jul 19, 2026

Where it’s heading

Rising hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026

Per russelllands.com, Russell Lands — described as Alabama's largest recreational developer — continues to build Lake Martin neighborhoods tied to its Russell Crossroads town center, and in 2024 the state passed HB209, described as Lake Martin's first proximity law (lakemartinboaters/lakemartinvoice, snippet grade) — both signals of an actively developing shoreline. Median home value is a single-year figure ($276,100, Census ACS-2024 block group) with no time series, so the rising call rests on ongoing development activity and a new regulatory response rather than a measured price trajectory; stable is a defensible alternate.
