Lake Erie is the shallow Great Lake, which means it warms fast, works hard, and gets in trouble quickly. Three basins change its mood: the warm nutrient-loaded west, the central basin with summer low-oxygen water near the bottom, the deeper east holding colder conditions. On the Ohio shore it is beach map, breakwall, port, perch, walleye, storm chop, gull sound, a horizon that makes small boats look suddenly honest. Not inland-lake lap. More wash. More weather. The same productivity that makes the fishery famous also leaves a green ledger. Phosphorus comes down the Maumee system; cyanobacteria blooms are measured by satellite and sample bottle; central-basin dead zones return in late summer. Headlands Beach is public in the plain state-park way: designated swimming, no glass, no alcohol, no pets on the sand. The fishing rulebook gets just as specific: six walleye in the 2026-2027 Ohio season, yellow perch limits split by zone. Lake Erie is beautiful, but never simple-clean. Too useful to be left alone, too shallow to hide what it's carrying.

- Public access
- Scoped to the Lake County / Headlands Beach / Fairport Harbor shore of Lake Erie (per curator note, not the whole binational lake). Public access is strong and multi-agency: Headlands Beach State Park (ODNR) is Ohio's largest natural sand beach with swimming, breakwall fishing, and picnic facilities; adjacent Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park (Lake Metroparks, 21 acres) adds a swim beach, kayak/paddleboard access, fishing, and day-use amenities; the Fairport Harbor Port Authority operates a 4-lane public boat ramp, jet-ski launch, fishing pier, and transient docking. County-wide, ODNR's coastal public-access inventory lists 24 publicly accessible parks along 8.3 miles of Lake County shore. Fees/permits: Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park (Lake Metroparks): parking $2-3/day, season pass $25-35, watercraft rentals extra. Fairport Harbor Port Authority: boat launch $12 single/$17 dual, season pass $225-325 depending on timing/vessel type, docking $10 (4hr) to $150 (monthly). Headlands Beach State Park day-use/parking fee not confirmed — ODNR park page returned 404 on fetch.. Camp beaches specifically prohibit dogs and cats under OAC 1501:46-9-10. (Ohio Administrative Code 1501:46-3-06 (leash requirement) and 1501:46-9-10 (camp beach pet prohibition), fetched 2026-07-12); At Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, dogs must be on a leash and are allowed only in the paved parking lot or a designated dog area east of the concession stand; lake/beach access for dogs is currently closed due to shoreline erosion. Where it’s heading
Stable hand-rated for v0.1 · lake-level · as of Sep 3, 2026
Established, century-old resort and working coast (Geneva-on-the-Lake is 'Ohio's first summer resort'); the Lake County / Ashtabula eastern shore is settled and built-out, with no documented growth velocity. Erie's recurring western-basin HABs and central-basin hypoxia are water-quality issues, not population or market decline. Hand-rated for v0.1.
